9/11 remembrance service this morning

Today is the 18th anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks and area residents are invited to remember those who were lost during a service this morning.

The local 9/11 Remembrance Service will be held at the Rome/Floyd Firefighters Memorial Plaza located at the intersection of West 1st Street & West 6th Avenue behind City Hall.

It begins at 8:15 a.m.

On 9-11, 121 engine companies, 62 New York Fire Department ladder companies, and 27 fire officers were deployed to the World Trade Center.

All off-duty firefighters were recalled — the first time the New York Fire Department had issued a total recall in over 30 years.

There were 75 firehouses in which at least one member was killed.

The New York Fire Department also lost its department chief, first deputy commissioner, one of its marshals, one of its chaplains, as well as other administrative or specialty personnel.
